Emory University Hospital-Adult Travel Planning Guide

Overview and Travel Assistance
Atlanta, the capital of the state of Georgia, rests in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, 1000 feet above sea level, in the northwest portion of the state. It derives its name from the Western and Atlantic Railroad, which made the city a major transportation hub. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport maintains that designation, as the busiest airport in the world and a major hub for Delta Airlines. During the Civil War’s Battle of Atlanta, most of the city was burned to the ground; when it was rebuilt during the Reconstruction period, the architecture more closely resembled northern cities than its neighbors in the south. Atlanta was the birthplace of Coca-Cola, Martin Luther King, Jr., and “Gone With the Wind” novelist Margaret Mitchell. The film based on her book, which depicts the Battle of Atlanta, had its premiere at Atlanta’s Loew’s Grand Theatre in 1939, with stars Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable in attendance. Hosting the 1996 Summer Olympics brought great change to Atlanta, from transportation to the economy and demographics. It is home to the MLB’s Braves, the NBA’s Hawks, and the NFL’s Falcons, as well as the Georgia Aquarium, which is the world’s largest. Although Georgia is called the Peach State, you won’t find many peach trees in Atlanta; but you will find more than 70 streets, roads, and avenues with the word “peach” in their names. The most famous is the Downtown thoroughfare, Peachtree Street.
There is a lot of precipitation in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Temperatures are relatively mild, but there can be large swings during the summer and winter, with the potential for large snowstorms. Don’t forget to check the weather a few days before you visit.
