Salt Lake City, Utah is the capital of the state, and it is nestled among the Great Salt Lake, the Wasatch Range, and the Oquirrh Mountains. The Jordan River runs through the city, while eight ski resorts are situated within 45 minutes of downtown. This “crossroads of the west” was originally home to the Ute Indians, then formally founded in 1847 by Mormon Pioneers, led by Brigham Young. The 2002 Olympics were held in SLC, and much of the infrastructure for the games has helped to develop the local area. Outdoor sports remain popular, as are the NBA’s Utah Jazz. There is also a burgeoning tech scene, earning the city a new nickname: Silicon Slopes. At an average elevation of over 4,000 feet, visitors coming from altitudes closer to sea level should allow some time to adjust.
