Kansas City straddles the state lines of Kansas and Missouri, having been founded where the Kansas River meets the Missouri River on the far eastern edge of Kansas and the far western edge of Missouri. Smack dab in the middle of the country, flights from either coast take about three hours. This City of Fountains, with more fountains than any city in the world except Rome, is also home to Hallmark Cards and Walt Disney’s first animation studio, where he fed the mouse that inspired Mickey. The Santa Fe, California, and Oregon trails also have their origin points here. Kansas City is the Haunted House Capital of the World, in addition to offering more barbecue restaurants per capita than any other U.S. city. Local professional sports are experiencing something of a dynasty right now, as Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have taken them to multiple Super Bowls and achieved several wins. Every March, the city hosts more college basketball games than any other.
Due to its landlocked location, Kansas City is subject to weather extremes. July is the hottest month, while January is the coldest. Snow and rainfall accumulations are high, with lots of wet weather in Spring and Summer. This area is also part of “Tornado Alley,” as you may have guessed from Dorothy’s experience in “The Wizard of Oz.” Despite the weather, she knows there’s no place like home. Don’t forget to check the weather a few days before you visit.
