I'm sorry that I just found this Thread. I am a 48 year old Police Officer and I have been in law enforcement for a total of 27 years but I'm not in a position to retire and don't currently meet the age requirements (25 years or 55 years of age). I am currently a Deputy Sheriff assigned as an SRO and I have 6 years past experience with the US Marshals Service which caused a break in my Deputy Sheriff service. In 2010, I experienced a syncopal episode while off-duty and at home. That lead to me visiting the Mayo Clinic where I was confirmed to have HCM. They suggested that I have an ICD placed but I have been successfully being treated with 100 mg of Metroprolol and a daily heart dose over-the-counter Aspirin. I have purposely attempted to avoid any strenuous physical activity and I have had to avoid promotions because of the physical agility requirements. I realize it is probably just a matter of time before I will be leaving law enforcement and having the ICD placed. I have researched the idea of Social Security and Medical Disability for HCM but I can find little on this subject. It appears that it is all in how your doctor writes the letter to social security and how your agency will report it to the State and to Social Security. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.
