higher liver enymes and hcm

any one have higher liver enzymes alog with HCM ? is this common or a seperate event

Hi Gary-

Alan has had elevated liver enzymes and when he had his gallbladder out we asked for a liver biopsy. It came back as auto-immune hepatitis. We're really not sure if it has anything to do with the HCM, no one's ever suggested a connection.

yeah, high phosphatase enzymes have shown up in my bloodwork for some time now. The common causes appear to have been ruled-out by other tests, including additional blood work and an ultrasound. I've had 2 or 3 cardiomyopathy specialists who should know say that this can "sometimes" be caused by CHF.

Yes that is what i have been told too it could be the fact i have CHF and it could be fluid built up around my liver

Interesting. I had terrible pain over many years that they concluded was sludge in my gall bladder (no stones visable). I was scheduled to have another minor surgery at the same time and decided against it as I was being wheeled into surgery. The doc said that was OK, but that he would not agree to let me refuse to have my gall bladder out. Later I found out that the reason was both liver and pancreas enzymes were elevated. Well, I had it out, but continued to have the pain and still have it from time to time, although it has never reached the writhing on the floor in a ball stage that it reached before having my gall bladder out. Could it have been chf all along? Who knows? But it seems possible.

Ok, this may sound strange but I have a related question. My husband's enzymes aren't high, never have been. However, he sometimes has a pain in his left side, up under the ribs, especially when he's sick. No doctor has ever been able to explain it and I wonder if the spleen gets inflamed since it's got a large job to do when you're fighting something off. Anyone else have this problem?

Yes, I have pain up under my ribs on the left side nearly daily, although sometimes I will go for a few days or a week or two without it. For me it definitely comes when I have stressed my heart. For example, today I went to the Beijing Botanical Gardens - all flat walking, but lots of it. I began to swell after an hour or so and the pain grew right along with it. I was ready to quit and come home by lunch time, but we were there to allow someone to repay a debt (we had done him a big favor) so I had to walk all afternoon in pain, exhaustion, and weakness so he could take us out to supper afterwards. Ah the things we do to let others repay their debts! :?

I am now resting on the sofa with my feet up, but the pain is still there and will probably be there until I go to bed.

So, is it heart? Well, I think so. It is unrelated to digestion - it occurs when I am either full or empty and is not relieved by any bodily functions. (The gastroenterologist asked this and told me he thought it was probably heart.) My GP thinks it is heart. But, when I mentioned it to the cardiologist, he just said something along the lines of, "Who knows?" It is definitely related to activity that stresses my heart, but not solely physical activity. This also makes me think it is my heart. If it only occurred with exercise, I might think it was referred back pain because I have severe degenerative arthritis. But, it often occurs when sitting after a big meal as well as during and after exercise.

So, Reenie, I think it is HCM-related. I suspect that either the chf is doing something there, or that the pain is referred there from the heart, but as Dr. Gilligan said, "Who knows?"

Thanks for your experiences. I'll have to see if I can tell if his pain is stress related or not. He's had this pain since he was a child so it isn't anything new. I'd never even thought about it being his heart before. To my knowledge he's never had any CHF so for him I would have to say it may be referred pain from the heart. Like you, there isn't a correlation between meals or other bodily functions. I'll try to keep closer tabs to see what this might be. Thanks!

I too have also had that pain under my left rib area. I've also ran the track of running back and forth to the cardio and GI about a thousand times and each blames it on the other condition. Hey at least they are firm on one position right? :roll:

I've never had high liver enzyme but not to long ago my creatnine levels were high enough I could not have a cat scan done. But this week they were ok again.
