I got a call today from my daughters EP about a Medtronic ICD recall. Do you have any details?

Yes, there is going to be a recall on a very limited number of devices. As of this time it is not clear how many people this will effect. It is not likely from what I understand that many devices will need to be taken out, within the HCM population it will be very small. As I currently understand it is going to be for medtronic marque manufactured before 2003. Those who are pacer dependent will need to see their EP ASAP, those who are not pacer dependent will not need to rush - -I am sure your EP's will contact you and inform you of what needs to be done.

I have been through a recall myself and understand that this may be unsettleing for you all. I know that those involved with such matters will do their very best to get accurate information to you in a timely manner.

I understand the problem to be with power storage and NOT with inappropriate shocks or failure to shock.

When I know more I will pass it on.

Yes, the EP said the problem is with the power supply, but not as benign as you mentioned. He said there is a 1 in 10,000 chance the device basically will short out, meaning it is ineffective and they won't know if there is power. He talked of replacement and of using a magnet daily to turn it off and on. If the alarm goes off when it's shut down, the device is alive. If there's no alarm the battery is dead.

Terri - I have an affected model too. I have an EP appt. on Monday and have not yet been notified, but I am curious about what your EP told you would be the protocol for replacing. What time frame did he give you, and are you using the pacing function at all?

I feel like I am being called back to the mother ship for repairs!
