This is my first post and I'm so glad to have the opportunity to ask questions and read about the experiences of others.

I was diagnosed with HCM two years ago, but have been having my most severe symptom for almost ten years - approximately the same time I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. The symptom is a severe burning pain in my left upper back which sometimes goes across to whole back. This pain comes after eating and particularly when I walk soon after eating. It's severe enough to make me have to stop and rest. After a minute or so, I can continue for a while. This pain also occurs when lying down flat at night but can be relieved by sitting upright to some extent. However, it comes back if I lie down again.

I have been to the HCM clinic at Toronto General and they are suggesting an alcohol ablation. I do get out of breath going up stairs, etc. but I am also extremely overweight.

I take Monocor and Rhythmodan, but have been told they have not improved my condition.

I would really like to know if this symptom is familiar to anyone else before I agree to the procedure.

Thanks!

Laura

There are lots of people who have back pain instead of chest pain, and many who have trouble if they eat large meals. Try eating small meals several times a day and see if that helps. My other advice would be for you to contact your cardiologist and see if he has any input. Welcome to the HCMA.

Laura,
Your symtoms are very common for HCM. If it is time to eveluate septal reduction it is important to know as much as you can about your options.

Myectomy is the gold standard for treatment of obstruction in HCM as set forth in the ACC/ESC consensus document. Ablation is set for those who are not candidated for myectomy due to co-exsisting medical conditions or and several other factors.

Please make sure you investigate all options and ask questions about both.

If you have any questions please feel free to call us.

Best wishes,
Lisa
