Sudden Deaths in the Midlands since 2002:

Camden basketball player Marcus Warren, 16, collapses during a basketball game at Hilton Head High School. He is pronounced dead an hour later at Hilton Head Medical Center. His death is attributed to an arterial tear.

Dutch Fork basketball player Vic Sims, 17, collapses during a pickup game at Dreher High School. His death is attributed to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

5/15/03

Columbia student Brandon Butler, 15, collapses during a junior ROTC exercise. Conscious when taken by ambulance to Lexington Medical Center, he dies of apparent cardiac arrest one hour after his arrival. His death also is attributed to HCM.

9/7/03

A.C. Flora basketball player Lee Cannon, 17, collapses during a pickup game at Trenholm Park in Forest Acres. He is pronounced dead that night at Providence Memorial Hospital. The cause of death is attributed to an irregular heartbeat caused by a coronary artery that went through the heart muscle instead of around it.

Lower Richland football player Darryl Cornish, 15, collapses following a
late-afternoon practice. Diagnosed with heat stroke, he is pronounced dead two days later. An autopsy reveals Cornish had an enlarged heart, which fatally aggravated the heat stroke's symptoms.
