Lisa, is it the norm to be on heart medication after septal myectomy. My local cardiologist head no murmur and there was no provocable gradient with amyl on echo and he decided not to use medication. What is your opinion?

Patkir,

I know Lisa will soon give you input here. In the meantime , there are other considerations pertaining to heart meds post myectomy as well as those you have mentioned. Heart rate and BP are to be factored in . Remember myectomy is not a cure for HCM and the heart should still not ba allowed to beat with such force and high rate that other damage may worsen its' condition. Septal thickness is just one of the problems of an HCM heart.

Many of us post surgery are on various amounts and types of "heart " med. I had a myectomy 10-15-2003 and take atenolol 250mgs per day. At first I took 75mgs per day and worked back up to the present dose due to rate increase and chest pain.
