HAVE A HEART: Teen heart screenings are at Norcross High
If you have a teen, especially an athlete, do the kid a favor and take him or
her to Norcross High School this Saturday for a heart screen. It could be the
best $58 you ever spend.
From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the school will have 15 heart-screening machines in
its fine arts hallway.
Standing by will be a certified pediatric cardiologist who's qualified to
interpret heart scans.
Why bother?
This February, Ryan Boslet, 17, a Chattahoochee High School student, died.
His death was unexpected, as young Boslet was an athlete and seemingly in
great health.
An investigation showed the youngster's death stemmed from a heart muscle
disorder called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM.
It can be detected with a 10-minute heart-screen test.
Debbie Mason, co-president of the Norcross High PTSA, is the organizer of the
screening program.
If you'd like to sign up for one of the heart-screen tests , call her at
770-441-2748.
For more information, go to www.heartscreensforteens.com (http://www.heartscreensforteens.com).
If you're still waffling about the price, consider this: The normal cost for
echocardiograms ranges from $800 to $1,500.
