how safe is it being on Lasix having hcm

Lasix is another medication I don't see many posts of. Is it ok to be taking this. My husband is a new HCM victim and we're scared and we r in the learning stage of this disease. My husband is also on blood pressure medicine (lisinopril) Is this okay or not? Thank you

Dear Debbie,

Some people need Lasix. Most with HCM don't take it. Is he in congestive heart failure? Lasix is to reduce water, but unless he's in CHF, most people could actually handle a little more water in their blood streams to increase blood volume. Also, there are some blood pressure meds that are better for people with HCM than others. I don't know the one your husband takes, but maybe others will read this and respond on that. It sounds to me like you would benefit from seeing an HCM specialist. Lasix is used in many with HCM but great care must be used so that hydration is maintained while keeping off extra fluid. Yes it is a fine line and one that must be evaluated nearly daily.

I also take lasix, I have mild CHF and it does help with fluid retention, but just like Lisa and Reenie said you have to be careful and watch for signs of dehydration, i only take mine when needed, i have to do the old finger test on my leg, i press in at my shin bone to see if the indent stays there then i know i'm retaining fluid, my dads heart doctor taught me that years ago, when i take my lasix after a couple of days i don't feel quite as slugish, in other words i have a little more energy, but talk with your doctor, Just like Lisa says everyone is different and what works for me may not work for others, and call Lisa, it is important to see a specialist for this disease, cardio doctors, while good doctors this disease needs a doctor that deals with it on a regular bases
