No it does not appear that he had HCM - it does appear that if he had a good cardiology check up including and echo that his problem could have been detected and treated. We have lost someone with the ability to make thousands smile - what greater gift can a person give.

Actor and comedian John Ritter has died unexpectedly after he was rushed to the hospital for a "dissection of the aorta," his publicist Lisa Kasteler told CNN.

Ritter, who would have turned 55 next week, was the star of the ABC series "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter."

In a statement, Kasteler said Ritter was rushed to the hospital after suffering from an unrecognized and undetected flaw in his aorta.

Surgeons at the hospital tried to save the Emmy Award-winning actor but were unable to do so, the statement said.

WebMD.com described an aortic dissection as "an abnormal separation of tissues within the walls of the aorta" caused by high blood pressure, family history of the condition, disease of connective tissue, or severe trauma to the chest.

"Aortic dissection results in a weakened blood vessel wall that may also rupture," the Web site says.

Ritter was best known for his role as Jack Tripper on the long-running television sitcom, "Three's Company."

He was the youngest son of Western film star and country music legend Tex Ritter, according to his biography on ABC's Web site.

John Ritter was born on September 17, 1948. He is survived by his wife, Amy Yasbeck, and their daughter, Stella, and three children -- Carly, Tyler and Jason -- from his first marriage to Nancy Morgan.

May God be with John's family during this most awful time in their lives.

God Bless John Ritter! He made me laugh, too. My prayers are with him and family on and off the screen. He will be missed on this earth, only now to make our angels laughter louder.

Love and Light,
Sharon

I will also be praying for the living - expecially the cast and crew of his hit TV show who apparently were witness to him collapsing on the set. I am sure that words cannot express what they must be going through right now.

God bless John Ritter and his entire family - both private and public.

He was a funny person...felt so sad for his family. I believe his father, Tex, died from a heart attack? I've always wondered why people who have any kind of cardiac history, are NOT given an echo?! You go and have a physical and have blood work done, etc. but are not given an echocardigram when you have a family history of cardiac death. I've known a few people who had a mild heart attack and were periodically followed up with their cardiologist but not given an echo?? It boggles my mind to say the least

I too grew up watching , john Ritter on tv, I was shocked when i heard about his death,i agree with you on testing, people with cardiac conditions that seem to run in the family, but some of the problems are doctors not being educated, on cardiac diseases, unless they deal with specific cardiac disease on a daily bases, Just like my great nephews doctor telling my brother that you can't be born with HCM, i was dum founded being he is a neo natal specialist, i told my neice to insist on an Echo for her son, i told her that should be the first thing they should look for, with his heart being enlarged, and then go from there, you know dr.s are human and they can make mistakes and that she was going to have speak up, and be her baby's avocate. Cynthia Take care, that is just my thoughts Shirley

Shirley,
that is SO true...you have to educate yourself. Yes, I agree. My former cardiologist (not that I didn't like her)...told me when I saw her for just the second visit last November when I had my first bout of CHF , actually admitted to me that she did not know a lot about HCM and therefore referred me to Tufts NEMC.

now that's a good dr. that will admit they don't know about HCM, and refer you out to someone that does, my cardiologist told me that i didn't need to go see anyone else and i told him yes i could and left
