The August issue of Reader's Digest has an article titled Not Your Father's Heart Attack. It discusses less invasive options to open heart surgery. A section of the article discusses alcohol ablation as a treatment for HOCM. There was even a description and a diagram of the HOCM heart. I was pleased to see some exposure on this topic in such a widely distributed magazine.

Even though I was happy about the media coverage, I took issue with the fact that the article portrayed the patient as being able to "play softball and tennis again" and "sprints up the stairs (six flights) two at a time". I feel this gives readers a false sense of being "cured" from this condition.

Just my two cents.

Dolly, I'll have to look that article up! Thanks for the heads up.

Speaking of Reader's Digest articles. Did any of you catch the April 2003 issue? There's an article called "How I Caught Every Disease on the Web". Describes me to a "t" lately. In any event, it offered an interesting perspective on how dangerous internet diagnosis can be.

Just something to think about... Always good to keep an open mind.

Be well...
