Anyone have advice on how you mentally prepare yourself for a myectomy? I know its in my future, but just the thought of such an important surgery gets to me. I've only had the last 10 monthes to adjust the fact of having a heart problem and changing my life drastically and words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated. :)

Dear Lana,
In April of last year I was diagnosed with HOCM and it was completely out of the blue. 4 months later I was at Cleveland Clinic having my myectomy; I understand what you mean about not having much time to come to terms with a diganosis before facing a major surgery. As for ways to mentally prepare I have suggestions but most of it is just a matter of time and processing. It's like once you finally get to the point that you are so symptomatic that you aren't living anything close to a normal life then you're more likely to accept facing surgery. Becoming well acquainted with the speciality center that will do the surgery, listening to guided imagery tapes/CDs, prayer or meditation are all helpful. Continuing to read current and past postings regarding myectomies here on the board will also be helpful. It's hard to give you a good line of advice to follow as everyone is different. Ask questions and be patient with your mind as you work through the process of acceptance.
All the best,
Lynn
