HEADLINE: Schlotzsky's Sponsoring Student-Athlete Heart Screenings & Healthy
Heart Fest on May 17; 3rd Year of Free Screenings to Prevent Sudden Death of
Student Athletes
DATELINE: AUSTIN, Texas, April 23, 2003
BODY:
Schlotzsky's Inc. (Nasdaq:BUNZ)
Schlotzsky's(R) Deli is teaming up again with Austin Heart Foundation to
provide free screenings for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) for student
athletes in Central Texas.
Last year, 688 screenings administered through the program resulted in 17
individuals recommended for additional diagnostic testing to determine heart
abnormalities.
The 2003 Championship Hearts(tm) screening program -- for which former
University of Texas quarterback Major Applewhite returns as spokesman -- kicks
off on Saturday, May 17, at the Heart Hospital of Austin, 38th Street and Lamar
Boulevard, with Healthy Heart Fest: a half-day (8 a.m. to noon) of free HCM
screenings for student-athletes on mobile echocardiogram machines, complimentary
food (breakfast tacos, pizza and soft drinks) and prize giveaways.
For the third year, Schlotzsky's and Coca-Cola(R) are underwriting the
program through which boy and girl student athletes in such high-activity sports
as football, basketball and soccer can get free screenings for hypertrophic
cardiomyopathy. The genetic heart condition affects about 1 in 500 and is the
leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young people. The condition claimed the
life of Luling football player Steven Taylor in August 2001 and three more Texas
high school athletes since then.
Volunteer cardiologists from Austin Heart and Children's Cardiology
Associates are donating their time to administer the screenings. Each screening
takes about 5 minutes and is a non-invasive procedure.
"Early detection of HCM can help prevent tragic deaths," says Dr. George
Rodgers, an Austin cardiologist and president of Austin Heart. "We will take
this program statewide this year with sponsorship from Schlotzsky's and the use
of the mobile echocardiogram machines."
Individual medical insurance policies seldom cover HCM screenings, and most
school districts cannot afford the tests, which can cost as much as $1,000 per
student. Three mobile echocardiogram machines, purchased by Schlotzsky's(R) Deli
in 2001, can be taken to sites across the state, dropping the cost of the
screenings to as little as$5 an athlete. Otherwise, testing of student athletes
across Austin might cost as much as $1.5 million.
Free regional screenings at locations in 15 counties across Central Texas and
a second Healthy Heart Fest on August 9th in Austin are planned as part of the
2003 Championship Hearts(tm) program.

Texas at the Heart Hospital of Austin, call the Championship Hearts(tm) Hotline,
