[HIGH ALTITUDE AND HCM]

My husband was diagnosed about 10 yrs ago-he's 49 now. We live at 6500 foot elevation and wondered if there's any info on altitude affecting hcm? It seems o.k. one day and the next day he can hardly walk-which seems about normal for alot of people with this disease ,but just wondering if anyone else knows about how big a roll altitude plays in how severe symptoms are?

It is my understanding that your body adjusts to the altitude after a week or two. We are located at 4300 and asked our doctors about it and apparently, it does not make the situation worse because you adapt to it.

Hi,
Welcome to the board. I would think that the altitude concerns should be based on a couple questions: How long have you lived at that level and how long before the diagnosis were you there? Basically, if it is true that your body adjusts to the altitude, then if your husband had been at that altitude for a while _before_ the HCM, then it is likely that that it is just the HCM all by itself that flattens him from time to time.
However, on the days that he feels rotten, is he taking his pulse and making sure he is in sinus (normal) rhythm? If he is going in and out of rhythm, that would explain the difference in how he feels because when you are out of rhythm, you don't have any energy.

My father had this disease and altitude didn't seem to matter much - he summered in the mountains and wintered in Texas. The humidity seemed to have more of an effect on him than anything else.
