Does anyone know of a connection between the use of Fen-Phen and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy? or aggravation of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy?

A friend's 43 y. old wife died unexpectedly and the autopsy listed Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy as the cause - which was a total suprise to the family. She had a known heart mumur and ECG several weeks before her death that showed normal sinus rhythm with 1st degree AV block and a chest x-ray showed her heart size moderately enlarged with slight central vascular enlargement. (I'm taking this from her medical records) She was never diagnosed with or treated for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy before her death. She had been on Fen-Phen for about a year before it was taken off the market. She also had stomach surgery 4 days before her death, but had been released to go home by her surgeon the day before she died.

Has anyone ever heard of this? Is there a doctor that has written or researched this? The family is worried and I'm trying to help them understand what happened.

Rich,

First of all - ALL family members need to be screened--RIGHT AWAY!!

Second - This is a very complicated situation which may have serious legal implications. I am happy to help in anyway I can - however, I would need more detail. I suggest you or the family call the HCMA office and schedule an appt so this can be discussed further.
