is the dosing the same between these 2? i.e. if you're switching from one to another, is the dose in mg the same?

I've been "suffering" on non-er metoprolol, (because my mail-order pharmacy sucks), for way too long. There was a recall on generic metoprolol er a while back...its been so long, I can't even remember when it was...followed by a back-order, and the stuff just wasn't available. Well, everyone else in the world started getting it months ago, "express scripts" still says its on back-order.
So I just had my annual physical w/ my primary care doc, who doesn't "manage" my HCM, but is very much aware of it, and all...asks me for updates, etc. I was "grumping" about this situation, and he didn't like it one bit. apparently called up express scripts and yelled at them. (LOL!) and along comes a rx in the mail from them, with a letter containing some BS about "oh, we're getting Toprol xl for the same price as the generic, and passing along the savings to you". (yeah, right).

ANYway...I've been taking 25mg metoprolol, twice a day. (it doesn't last 8 hrs...I can feel it). My new rx says Toprol xl 50mg/once a day. I could swear that in the past, I took it as 25mg/x2...and also metoprolol er, when I could get it, twice a day.
(I know they SAY "once a day dosing"...that might be fine if you're treating HBP, but I seem to remember it not "really" lasting that long).
I can't find an old rx bottle to back-reference. Is it typical to take even the ER meds twice a day, or once?

I take my Toprol in two doses. I take 50 mg. in the morning and 50 mg. in the evening for a total of 100 mg. There is no reason that you can't split the dose. And the Toprol tablets are scored so you can cut them in half and take one half in the a.m. and one half in the p.m.

hello all, again the subject of meds. well be forewarned again after i looked into this myself 3yrs ago if you are given BRAND NAME TOPROLXL stick with it . do not be talked into generic metoprolol , i had a very bad reaction to it with rapid beats and pulpatations . a generic only has to contain 80% of med. opposed to toprol xl which is 100% and after speaking with dr. Lever he also did agree with me . and i felt great after i was back on toprol so please be careful !!!!
