I have had pneumonia this past week and oh has it been fun. My lungs are all clogged up per se. So, my primary started me on albuterol inhaler and nebulizer treatments. She also gave me a shot of solumedrol and I'm also already on prednisone for my Crohn's disease.

Needless to say yesterday in her office she gave me another nebulizer treatment and my heart rate skyrocked and my upper body started flushing bright red! I felt terrible.

Is this a contraindication for those of us with HCM. I didn't sleep at all last night and am still shaking.

Is it Tuesday yet?

Mary, ask Marty specifically about Albuterol for the future, but no it is not good for the HCM heart as it can cause tachycardia. Instead inquire about Xopenex. This is used in place of albuterol.

Albuterol does increase your heart rate, I don't know of an absolute contraindication to using it in HCM.

I am a respiratory therapist and the normal side effect of Albuterol is increase heart reate and shaking. Did your primary doctor not know that you have HCM? My sister's allergist gave her a tx in their office a few years ago and she went into v-fib, was shocked and fell out in the waiting room.

If your heart rate goes up more than 20 beats during the nebulizer, stop it and call your doctor.

Did your doctor know that you were already on Prednisone? Solumederol does open up your lungs better but may have been too much with your Prednisone. I would ask them to give you Atrovent or Xopenex for your inhaler (it has less cardiac side effects).

What kept you awake last night was probably the steroids and the Albuterol. Do you feel better today?

Have you tried Mucinex? It really helps break up the mucous and doesn't interfere with the heart (according to my doctor).

Thanks for this post. It never crossed my mind, but we have to neb my 3 year old son quite often, and often times I get half of the treatment because he won't keep it in his mouth. I guess I get out of doing the treatments now!

Anyone else ever try Mucinex? I'd love to find something to help with congestion. Sometimes a humidifier just doesn't do the trick.

Because it was a guess as to whether it was the steroids or the albuteraol nebulizer or the combination treatments that last put me into a-fib a year ago... these past 2 times they put me on Nasocort and Flomax. I did also do the nebulizer treatments but less then 4 a day actually 2 a day, and no a-fib and the regime worked.

I get bronchitis with some frequency, and I also have bad allergies. I use Nasocort daily, and have for years. When I start to feel a wheeze coming on, I use Flovent inhaler. That is the only thing my primary has ever felt comfortable giving me due to my HCM. It works, but because it is a steroid, it sometimes takes a few days. It is not a rescue inhaler.
