Currently Im only on 25mg of atenolol. Been feeling light headed and a little more short of breath. Might a higher dosage help? Or might it add to the lightheadedness? The reason I ask is that very recently, after going over my echo with Lisa I became aware that my treatment has been pretty incompetent. Therefore, Im going to be doing every thing I can to get out of the Kaiser system and get to where I can get some experienced help and treatment. Considering all this, should I even trust Kaiser with my meds? Also, does anyone have experence gettin referals from Kaiser to outside sources-namely Stanford? Id appreciate any input--- Mike

I do know that it is possible to get referred outside of Kaiser for certain specialties. I am not sure exactly how and why it is done, but I know that Lisa has dealt with this before.

It will be critical to establish that Stanford has expertise that Kaiser does not have with HCM. You might start by researching Stanford's HCM Center on the web and print out material on Stanford and Dr. Ashley and send them to the relevant people at Kaiser.

An increase in your meds might help. A switch might be necessary also. You really need to find your way to a specialist who can evaluate your situation better.

We are seen through Sutter here in the Sacramento area - and didn't have a problem getting referrals to Stanford. But I'm not sure if it is different with Kaiser. If Lisa is recommending you get another opinion or be seen at a Center of Excellence, I would definitely look into it.

My son has been seen at the children's hospital at Stanford a couple times now and I have an appointment set up for December to see Dr. Ashley at the HCM Center there, since I am gene positive. I have been working with the various staff at Stanford for several months now and have been extremely happy.

Do look into and push for the referral - I think getting into a Center of Excellence is worth it. Best of luck . . . and please feel free to email me since we're in the same "neck of the woods.":)
