Hi, I was in for my yearly doctors appointment. (GP not Cardio) They did blood work and said my cholesterol was to high and put me on Zocor 40 mg once a day. I would like to know if anyone has been on this and what you can tell me about it. Any information that you would like to share would be helpful. Thanks and have a good weekend.

I think you are talking about Zocor. My husband who does not have HCM took that for awhile. Now he takes Lipitor instead. It is important is for them to monitor your liver enzymes while you are on it as it can cause liver damage if not monitored carefully. Also I think that sometimes it can cause muscle aches and weakness so watch out for that.
How high was your cholesterol?

Thanks for the information. You are right I had a typo. My total number is 286. I don't know what the brake down is, but they said my HDL looks good. However, my LDL is not good at all. Did your husband have problems with this medicine? Is that why he is now on something different? Thanks again for the information and help.

He originally switched because his insurance switched what was preferred on the formulary. Then his doctor thought that his numbers looked better on Lipitor but he was fine on both of them.
By the way, your cholesterol numbers are in line with what his were. Mine have at times inched over 200 and my doctor has suggested meds, but then I have been able to get it down to 150 or so on my own by eating low fat diet and lots of oatmeal!

Thanks, I will try the oatmeal thing. Can it be flavored or just the regular stuff? I thought I was been a little bit good on my food choices, but I guess I need more work. I checked out a cookbook for low-fat, low cholesterol cooking. I have to go back in 2 months to have it checked again. I will tell you what it is down to. ( positive thinking and all )

I think that any kind of oatmeal is ok. I generally use the Quaker quick oats and add either some fruit or jam and some splenda myself. I think that the slower cooking kind is better as the grains are still whole and the quick oats are broken up, but I don't have time to cook breakfast in a pot. I use the microwave. I have also taken to eating egg white omelettes or Egg Beaters. There is no cholesterol in those.

Thanks that is a good article, a lot of good information. I will try the egg white instead of the whole egg. You have been a lot of help, thanks a lot.

Shirley, thanks for the letter. I have never heard of an abdominal aorta blockage before. It sounds kind of spooky. What can they do about it? I have been trying to eat better myself. I hope to get my numbers down so I can get off the meds. Good luck with your blockage. Keep us informed about your numbers. Have a good week.
