Things to do in or around Rochester, MN

Hello! We are leaving next week for our journey to the Mayo. We are driving from NM to Hastings, Nebraska. My step dad's family is all there, so we'll be spending a few days and doing some stuff in that area. I was wonering if anyone knew of any "must sees" from the Nebraska area into the Minn. area. We are planning on going to Mall of America one day, but other than that I'm not sure what to do. I will be traveling w/ my mom, step dad and my 2 sons who are 8 and 11. My husband has to stay home and work. He's not happy about that, but I told him I need to go and now is the time, so he's supportive of that and wants me to get the best care. He is also nervous about us travelling w/out him. It's a 17 hr. drive one way, so we'll be in the car quite a bit.

Google Rochester, MN for the tourism site. There are a couple things to do, but not a ton. Bring some board games and books.

I loved looking at the history of the Mayo Clinic. The subway has some early medical equipment that was in display cases. This was so interesting to me (and a little disturbing at the same time LoL). I enjoyed walking around the town. We also did the Mall of America. You can go on the website for the clinic and get a little info about some self tours that I enjoyed.

The clinic itself has a beautiful art collection. I bet it would take hours to take it all in. If you play piano, there's a couple of grands in the lobby and in the cafeteria. (I had a bunch of seniors rocking one afternoon).
There are a couple of movie theatres in town (opposite ends). And I hear the Civic Center is beautiful and there are public concerts and events there so check that calendar.

I live in the Twins Cities. Don't know your exact dates, but if you get up here to the Mall of America and are a baseball fan, you might take in a Twins game. Looks like you might be here in June? Twins are home June 2,3,4 against Cleveland. June 4 is an afternoon game.
Then they're home again on June 16,17,18 against Pittsburgh. June 18 is an afternoon game. Feel free to ask any other questions or PM me......
