OK. One more ?? I received my schedule for the Mayo. On June 1st I'm scheduled for tests all day and then on June 2nd I have an exercise test scheduled at 11:00. What do you do on the exercise test? I've never actually had one before. Also, they did not have a time I'm supposed to meet w/ Dr. Ommen. Will they schedule that while I'm there or what? Thanks~

There should be a time that you are scheduled to see Dr. Ommen. If there isn't, you should contact Suzan and ask what's up. He may or may not cancel the exercise test after you see him. It depends on what he is thinking, but they usually schedule that on the second day after you have seen Dr. O.

The exercise test is an oxygen consumption test. They put you on a treadmill with a mask on your face that regulates the exact amount of oxygen that your body takes in and then measures the how well you metabolize. The mask can be a little weird at first, but it is no big deal. The number that you get on the test is called the V02 Max .

OK. At the end of day 1, there's a 3:15 on 6 East that says Desk 6 East, Cardiovascular Diseases. Is this my appt. w/ Dr O? It doesn't have his name on it or anything. I think I overlooked this since it didn't have his name. I have an email in to Suzan to double check.

He usually sees you 3/4 the way thru day 1. This allow him to squeeze in additional tests that afternoon or even to cancel whats planned the next day.

Helpful hint: bring protein bars and water. Sometimes you need quick energy in between appointments. (be sure not to eat before any fasting tests). also - you can sometimes arrive early (esp. for blood work) and they can squeeze you in. You'll find them very accommodating.

I did not like the exercise stress test. I found it incredibly hard to exercise with this thing covering my face like it did. I did fine on the test, but I hated every minute of it. LOL.

I will say this, I find it oddly peaceful and relaxing to go to Mayo. Maybe this makes me strange, but when I step into the place I am confident and secure. I just feel like I am so well taken care of there, more than a number and I truly do feel that even though I have HCM, Mayo is there for me and all is well.

Good luck with your appointments. Dr. Ommen is so fantastic and so is his nurse and everyone who you do tests with will be so caring and kind (at least they were with me).

I just want to echo that you will like Dr. Ommen and the Mayo Clinic. They are top of the line and do an excellent job. My husband has been under his care for a year and even though the diagnosis is not great, we really appreciate his expertise and knowledge. He is a very nice man who is also a Dr.!
