A 17 yr. old boy in my town collapsed a few weeks ago and had to be shocked twice before getting a heart beat. He was at a softball game, just watching and fell over dead. Luckily there was a dr. there who performed CPR until the paramedics showed up very quickly and had to shock him twice. They air-vacced him to a hospital in a bigger town. There he was in ICU on life support for a day and then started to come to. They did an EKG, echo, angiogram, and who knows what else, and they all came back normal. The drs. there wanted to put in an ICD and told him no sports. He is a big basketball and track star at our HS. He had actually just signed to play college basketball. So, his family wanted a 2nd opinion and flew him to Baylor in Dallas, TX. There they repeated some of the tests and did an EP study, which everything they did also came back normal. They went ahead and put in the ICD. I'm not sure what they said on the sports, but I think at this point they're just happy he's here! Any ideas as to why this might have happened? The family still wonders why and I'm sure he's scared it's going to happen again.
