I'm scheduled for a trip to Mayo at the end of April. I'm looking for suggestions about a place to stay and whether car rental is necessary. From looking at Mapquest it seems that Mayo is out in the middle of nowhere, so walking from a hotel (if I could find one) is out? I haven't checked prices for the onsite Marriot but I suspect it'll be out of my price range.
What I'd really like is a hotel with shuttle from/to the airport, shuttle to/from Mayo and within walking distance of a grocery store.
Any comments about whether a car is needed or anything else is appreciated.
Thanks,
zippy

the Mayo Rochester has a concierge who can help you with travel info and I suspect scottsdale would also. their website is extremely helpful about all this. i don't think many of us have been to the mayo s. as the HCM clinic is in Rochester.

Here is a link to some hotels nearby. I have never been a patient at Mayo Scottsdale but I have visited Scottsdale numerous times. The distances are pretty far and walking around isn't really an option. If you stay at the Marriott next door you wouldn't need a car, but otherwise I would suspect you would. I also doubt that you could find a grocery store that you could get to without a car. Scottsdale is basically filled with one mini mall after the next, but the whole area is very spread out.

I have been to the Mayo in Scottsdale twice. I have stayed both times at the Comfort Inn in Fountain Hills, AZ (description from their web page)

Welcome to the Comfort Inn, a Fountain Hills hotel near Mayo Clinic Scottsdale
The Comfort Inn® hotel is conveniently located on the southeast corner of Shea Boulevard and Saguaro Boulevard, one block from Highway 87. The Mayo Clinic Scottsdale is four miles from the hotel.
The Marriott on the grounds of the Clinic is very expensive!!!
A Denny's is right next to the hotel. There is a shuttle to the Mayo and from there the Mayo provides transportation to the main hospital on a frequent basis.
I drove both times to the clinic - an eight hour drive from my home.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the great tips. The first hotel listed on the Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau is Comfort Inn Fountain Hills. To top it off they have a special rate for Mayo guests. $87/night. They'll give me a ride back and forth to the clinic and there is a grocery store within walking distance. Plus a fridge in the room. It's all perfect!
