I was fortunate to receive an invitational entry into the Boston Marathon for the 2nd year in a row. This year, I’ve chosen to use my run on April 21, 2008, as an opportunity to raise funds for the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association (HCMA), and I’m writing to seek your support.
As many of you know, HCM is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in the young, including competitive athletes. The estimated prevalence in the US general population is 1:500. Numerous mutations in cardiac sarcomeric genes result in disorganization of cellular architecture. While clinical expression of HCM varies widely, typical features include focal left ventricular wall thickening, mitral valve disease, heart failure, ischemia, arrhythmia, syncope, and sudden death.
Sudden cardiac death in the athlete is a particular clinical interest of mine, and I will be developing and directing a consultative service in this area as a new EP attending at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill starting this summer.
The HCMA is a not-for-profit organization that has been dedicated to providing information, support and advocacy for patients, their families and medical providers since 1996. More information about the HCMA may be found at www.4hcm.org.
Any amount of support would be greatly appreciated. If you would be interested in making a contribution to the HCMA, please
1. Go to www.4hcm.org,
2. Click on ‘Donate’ at the top of the home page,
3. Follow prompts to enter your information,
4. In the Type field ‘In Honor of’ (second line from the bottom), enter ‘Eugene Chung’.
Thank you very much for your support.
Warm regards,
Eugene Chung

Eugene is a not an HCM patient but a physician still in training and with an interest in HCM and related issues. The HCMA is proud to have him represent us in something as big as the Boston Marathon - Now that is a BIG HEARTED effort!
Thanks Eugene!
