Grief counsellors are at a Markham school on Tuesday after an eight-year-old student collapsed and died in a stairwell yesterday afternoon.
The young boy died at John McCrae Public School in the Major Mackenzie Drive and McCowan Road area just after 3:30 p.m.
Police said he suffered from an undisclosed medical condition and collapsed on his way back from gym class. But one radio news report said he was running up and down the staircase as part of class.
His teacher reportedly tried to revive the boy, without success.
Police investigators said foul play was not suspected.
Members of the school's staff stayed behind late in the evening.
"Our staff have been affected by this," principal Farooq Shabbar told the Toronto Star Monday evening. He added that a "support team" would be at the school in the morning.
