Does anyone know about any new meds on the horizon for controlling AFIB?? I thought I had heard something a few months ago..it's supposed to be pretty effective in controlling afib without the adverse affects that amiodorone has

Hi Cynthia,
I did a bit of research and all I could come up with was the following.
http://emergency-medicine.jwatch.org/cgi/content/full/2006/929/1 (http://emergency-medicine.jwatch.org/cgi/content/full/2006/929/1)
There was one other site I tried to review, but every time I tried to go for it, my machine locked up. I think it was posted in 1990 so it may not be available any longer – and I wouldn’t consider it a ‘new’ drug. Hope this helps.

Cynthia.
My local electrophysiologist told me that they are working on as "first cousin" to ambioderone in Europe, but that if they are successful it might take 5 years or so before we see it. It is supposed to be about as effective without the nasty side effects. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Dronedarone is undergoing testing in the US and Europe with mixed results. Here is a link to a site with info. It's been called a cousin to amio.http://www.drugdevelopment-technology.com/projects/Dronedarone/
