For the past few weeks, I have been having ALOT chest pains. :( I have this really heavy book bag that I have to carry all my junk in at school, and I have realized that the weight hurts my chest. But When I change classes I am normally either going up hill or up steps. I have been taking some Ibuprofen in the mornings, but it doesn't seem to help at all. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions??

Hi, Do you have a locker where you can store your books in so you don't have to carry all of them? Also, I find that lack of sleep also increases chest pain so make sure you get enough sleep/rest at night.

Hey Kayla,
First, dump the Ibuprofen and get acedamidafin (Tylenol) as it is much better for HCM people. Next, dump the book bag and get something with wheels. It may not help on the stairs, but will help a lot the rest of the time.

(Sorry to bust in on you here, but please think of me as your friendly Grandpa – just trying to help.)

Kayla,

I know a lot of young people shy away from the back packs on wheels; peer pressure and all, but it is the best option for avoiding the heavy back pack loads.

If they would just do for books what they have done with sneakers then they would be so light weight it would be wonderful! When you think of it WHY is paper and a binding SO heavy? Well I quess we will have to wait for an inventor to stumble upon an alternative.

Are there elevators for the disabled at your school? This definitely qualifies as a necessity for you.

Good luck and hope there is a solution that works best for you.

Kayla,

Another suggestion--see if it is possible to have a set of books that you can keep at home and keep one in each of your classrooms. This may take some work on the part of your counselor, parents, and doctor.

Good luck.

There is a med that can help and it doesn't make your BP lower at all it is called Ranexa you may want to bring this up with your doctor it has helped me but it is not for everyone they use mainly for people that has had a heart attack and nitro doesn't seem to help, i take 500mg twice a day and it has helped me alot I got to where i didn't want to get up anymore over fear of chest pain, ask it can't hurt i guess

Thanks for the advice!

We do have elevators but I dont know if they would let me use it! I have been buggin my parents about asking for me, but nothing has been done yet.

I do have a locker, and its on the 2nd floor but I dont have enough time to go to it cause my classes are like from the 3rd floor to the gym (which is across the street) then to the 3rd floor again and the to history building, and It is ANNOYING!! I ask alot of my friends to help me out by carriying my book bag or a few books cause its too heavy and it makes my chest hurt but they all laugh at me and call me weak. I hate that people dont understand how serious HCM really is. I have been thinking about maybe doing a speach about it at school so people would understand.

But having alot of stress could probably being making my chest hurt. (life as a 15 now a days is hard...) I dont get enough sleep, I dont have enough time to do everything, family stuff, boys and all sorts of stuff is stressful and I am pretty sure I dont need all this stuff bothing me. But I guess I'll get through it!!

Well I've gotta go, I have to go babysit my sisters kids. Bye!
