Hello all,

Well if anyone has been following, I've been on Tikosyn for a couple months now to help with my a-fib plus the v-fib episodes. Well, I had 3 non-sustained episodes plus one shock from my ICD last week, so back into the doc's office I went.

I've tried several different beta blockers before (betapace, atenolol) but always had side effects. He has now given me a prescription for Coreg. I'm picking up the prescription today, but I thought I'd due a quick search to see what people were saying about it.

I've come across several posts where people state that coreg should not be used for HCM patients. I've also found several where people are stating that is what they are on. is anyone taking coreg currently? Why shouldn't it be used for HCM? I'm also on tikosyn and cardizym, which I'll continue to take along with the coreg.

Carvedilol - Coreg - is used in combination with other medications to treat heart failure. It also is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Carvedilol is a combination of two classes of drugs called beta-blockers and alpha-blockers. It works by relaxing the blood vessels. Coreg also blocks alpha receptors in artery walls. This relaxes (expands) your arteries, lowering the resistance your heart pumps against - your blood pressure.
Coreg is used in those with Congestive Heart Failure - with great success. In typical HCM (without CHF) is is not the appropriate medication in most all cases.

Coreg is uses in those with a LOW EF - the combination of drugs help the heart beat harder - just what we HCM'er DO NOT NEED.

There is no data in the PDR about the use of Coreg in HCM. I have just contacted the manufacturer to obtain the data but it requires one of our medical advisors to collect the data, which they will then forward to the office.

I should have this data in about 1 week.

Best wishes,
Lisa
