I was just wondering if anyone knows if blood clots cause bruises? I feel kinda dumb asking but no one around me knows.

kayla,

I'm not sure of exactly what the situation is. I can tell you that blood clots are in the veins or arteries. Bruising is from capillaries that have broken and blood is under the skin. You get the diffrent shades of bruising from the stages of healing, by the body reabsorbing the blood. I do hope this helps you some.

Love and prayers!

Here is an excellent article on clots. they don't cause bruises--bleeding causes bruises.

When I had blood clots in my arm it was a bluish purple from about the forearm all the way down to the hand. It looked a lot like a bruise but it was from lack of blood flow to my arm and hand. From my experience in both superfical and deep vein thrombosis if you can feel it usually it is not a huge deal. But, your doc can do a doppler to find out. It's a painless test and they can also do a blood test called a D-dimer to see if there are possibilites of clots in places they have not looked at.

I had my first blood clot at 22 and a pulmonary embolism at 24. I now have a filter and for me was a good alternative to coumadin.

Hope this helps.

In November '03 I was seen in the ER for an arterial clot located behind my right knee. There was no bruising at all.
