Dear HCMA,

I was looking on the internet for some information about HCM and found your website. I was hoping maybe you (your team) could give me some advice. I am a 19year old female with a history of HCM in my family - several members of my family have died from this condition (including my cousin). Im am slightly overweight and a smoker, and have been diagnosed with 'athletically induced asthma'. I have recently been experiencing sharp, stabbing chest pains. I am supposed to attend regular check-ups (ECGs etc), but havent had one for about 3 years. So as you can imagine I have been slightly concerned and was wondering what I should do?

Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated. I was also wondering how higher (potential) risk I am to having this condition.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Mimi.

Welcome Mimi,
Please get back to your doctor and get an ECG and Echocardiogram as soon as you can. I am very sorry to hear about your family history and I am glad you have taken efforts to protect yourself.

Best wishes,
Lisa

Welcome. A lot of HCM is called asthma when they don't know what they are looking for.

There are some good HCM doctors in the UK and cardiomyopathy.org is the UK version of the HCMA. (You are of course welcome here, but some info specific to the UK may be found on their site or through them).

As Lisa suggests, you should high-tail it to your doctor and get an ECG and an echocardiogram as soon as possible.

With your history, you can't afford not to.

Let us know how it turns out.

Yes, get your self to the doctors, preferably an HCM specialist.
HCM is often misdiagnosed Asthma.
