Hi everyone!

Kelly and I have just returned from AHA in Dallas. Our Internet access was poor at best in our hotel and it was not possible to keep up with all the posts - I had 196 new posted when I logged on this morning...boy you have been busy!

While at the AHA we conducted a survey at our booth - the results are being evaluated as I type but I can tell you this much... I do not think ANYONE is going to be happy with the results. We asked 10 questions and received nearly 300 responses (which was REALLY good) - the questions were general - such as - what is the prevalence of HCM, when should you screen children in an HCM family, when should you screen adults and what are the risk factors for SD in HCM. As we were at the AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION meeting - I would have thought this to be a simple quiz with most everyone getting the answers correct and our little quiz would simply reinforce their knowledge.....I was VERY wrong.

While formal review of the results is needed a large number of respondents thought HCM to be in the area of 1:10000 and that children could be screened once in their teen years. We took the opportunity to educate each person of the truth upon the completion of the survey. I had actually started to think that attending the AHA may be 'preaching to the choir" and maybe I needed to rethink attending. I was VERY WRONG there too!

This Survey was a great tool to test the knowledge of the medical community and help steer the HCMA in the direction needed - MEDICAL EDUCATION! If the medical community is unaware how are the patients EVER going to get the care they need?!?

Much more happened at AHA ...but frankly I am too tired right now to go over it all!

More later!

Welcome back...wait a minute, these were doctors and medical professionals that answered the questionnaire?? If so, that's a travesty that they are SO clueless

If they know so very little about the basics, how can they be qualified to treat this condition?

I don't think any of us are really surprised by these results, due to our experiences with the medical profession, but to me at least, it's really scary.

You have your work cut out for you, Lisa.

We are still entering the data here - there are 300 to enter and we began on Thursday and should finish today. Samantha here in our office (not sure if I have introduced you via the message board yet - I will shortly!) is entering the data and I asked her "Well what do you think about the answers" she said "they have a lot to learn" - this from a high school student who has been working as a co-op student here for 3 months.

More soon!
