Does anyone take a daily med to calm your nerves when dealing with HCM? I was thinking of asking my PCP about possibly taking something. For the past few years since I've been having problems with afib, I get myself all nerved up when I start feeling thumps and skipped beats. My husband thinks I should also. I can't seem to relax
i went to PCP about two weeks ago for something for nerves my nerves were getting the best of me
she put me on ativan 0.5mg as needed until i get celexa which i bought from her office for 7.00
also celexa 20 mg once day for aniexy i didn't get it filled yet cause of no insurance and she doesn't carrying them in her office and pharmacy it is 89. for 30 pills but i will get them this Friday i was on them once before and stopped them cause of price but i know they help me before
i would really ask your Dr about it you would probably feel a lot better i know i do

Meditation is a great stress reducer, but I also take a little Ativan from time to time. Stress can cause palpitations, too.

Cynthia,
Sarah is right, meditation is a great for relieving stress and anxiety. One of the best meditation techniques I have found for relieving stress is called Yoga Nidra it means “deep sleep.” I have never been so relaxed as when I practice this technique. It has even helped me when I am having an episode of heart pain and I start to get anxious and scared. This technique calms me down. I still experience the heart pains but I am sort of just watching and experiencing the pain without being upset or scared about what is going on with my heart. It is very reassuring for me to know that at critical times I still have the awareness to be in control and not let my emotions take over. Most yoga teachers who are steeped in meditation would be able to teach this technique to you. I don’t know if a Hatha yoga teacher would necessarily know this technique.
Best wishes,
Joyce

Thank you for all of your replies. I saw my PCP this week and I am taking .5 mg. of Ativan. It has been helping. He said that he wants me to go that route and if the anxiety becomes a daily occurance, we can discuss the other class of meds such as zoloft, etc. but I don't think it's necessary at this point in time.
P.S. Did I ever tell you how wonderful my PCP is? He is so smart and caring always takes the time to sit and talk about my HCM. We had a discussion about how difficult it can be to deal with, with all its ups and downs (he has given lectures about HCM) and that was when I asked him about taking somethng to relieve stress and anxiety.

Dear Cynthia:
I am so glad to hear your doctor prescribed a med for you and that it is working. I have become a really big fan of getting a little help when you need it.
When my defibrillator went off twice and I was waiting for my myectomy, my cardiologist prescribed xanax which really helped me get through a tough time. My husband also took some to help him cope too.
Be well, Janet
