NORTH BRANCH, Minn. — Grief counselors were at North Branch Area High School on Wednesday after a freshman wrestler collapsed and died the day before.
Elijah Randolf Meyer, 14, died after a captain's practice of the wrestling team. The practices are organized by the team captain but not officially coached.
School Superintendent Rodney Reisnouer said the boy was talking to another student when he "simply collapsed.''
A previous physical on the boy indicated no signs of heart problems, Reisnouer said.
Reisnouer said two CPR-certified wrestlers immediately started CPR while a third wrestler called 911. "They did exactly the right things,'' he said.
The school has a heart defibrillator, but the superintendent said police quickly arrived with their own defibrillator, followed soon by an ambulance.
Police said in a news release on Wednesday that the 14-year-old boy was pronounced dead at Fairview Lakes Medical Center in Wyoming, MN.
North Branch is about 40 miles north of St. Paul.
