Hi,
I know this girl that has HCM and she doesn't know if she can take birthcontrol or not. She's 21 and takes atenolol daily. I know that birthcontrol pills can not be taken if you have a blood clot problem but I don't know if HCM would be effected by it or not. Thanks for your time.

Hormone-based birth control can be a problem. The flip side is that if she has to use condoms, she is at least mostly protected from STDs (viruses can be transmitted through oral-genital contact).
She needs to talk to her cardiologist to see what she or he says about it.
Considering her age and the HCM, she may want to think about using condoms and a diaphram together or getting an IUD--they are actually used a lot in Europe. It was just that one model that was really bad. The new ones are safe. Note that some IUDs have hormones in them.

Many women with HCM do take the pill, some do not based upon there own health history. This is a perfect conversation to have with her cardiologist. I am aware of some women who use birth control pills to control their HCM symptoms - as their symptoms appear to be very much tied to hormon levels and by maintaining a balance of hormons symptoms are lessened.
Talk to the doctor caring for this person about all of her options.
