I hate the condition. I always get asked if I'm okay by teachers or if I don't have my shirt on in the locker room other kids stare at me because of my scar from surgery. I believe I'm the only one in my family that has it. :( I don't like talking about it that much with other people who don't know how I feel.

Nobody here likes HCM, but I understand how a teenager would hate it a lot too. I have kids your age, one in 8th grade, one in 7th, and one in 5th. I know that they hate it when their hearts race and "hurt" when they're in gym class or even just watching tv. My 7th grader has had problems lately with his heart racing when he runs up the stairs and all. So far none of them have HCM diagnosed but their dad does and he has a scar from an ICD surgery.

I just want you to know that you can come here and talk to us, vent, laugh, or just hang out! We understand.

CardioClay, You're not the only one who feels that way. I'm glad you've found the "Hang Out". It may take a few days for some young people to check in and talk with you, but you will find friends and plenty of understanding here. Best wishes, Linda

Clay -
As President of the HCMA - I am also the President of the I HATE HCM club. We all hate it - we all wish it would just go away. The reality it it will not - no matter how hard we try!! Hang in there I was diagnosed when I was 12 (right here in NJ!) and that was many many years ago...you can live a normal life with HCM.

When I was in HS non of my friends understood - and some still dont - but that is OK - I learned how to be nice about telling them they were clueless  I also had a few good friends who DID understand and were and still are great support.

Hang in there.

Best wishes,
Lisa

Hey
I've hated HCM my whole life. I have always dreamed of dieing or finding some way to get rid of it my whole life. I figured if I die I won't have HCM anymore however my friends showed me that I can still have a good time with HCM.
This November it will be 19 years sense I was diagnosed with HCM. I was fine as a little child because I didn't know how serious it was then, however within the last couple years I have been in the hospital many times. Every time I go I get more and more scared that I will need surgery or something worse will happen I am 19 now. I just finished high school and trust me high school is just as bad as middle school worse sometimes. In middle school they let me take Gym and they trusted me to know when I needed to rest and just sit out. but in high school I never took gym the last time I was part of a gym class was in 8th grade I hate it I love gym! All my friends know this so when we are hanging out the try to treat me as if I was just like them. though there are somethings we can't Ignore or just forget for a few minutes, but its fun trying with my friends. I went through high school and through middle, and elementary school with HCM I was six months old when my family found out I had it so if you ever want to talk or have any questions I am here. Don't forget I just got out of school so it is still very fresh in my memory. I am always here to help and if I don't have an answer I will work to find you the right one. my cell number- please PM me for it. you can also e-mail me or chat with me. I would be happy to help!
