Does anyone know whether Niaspan is acceptable for lowering HDL levels in us HCMers? I started yesterday and tonight my heart feels a lot like it did before beta blockers - that is, it is beating hard, although it is not beating too fast due to being paced. It is sufficient to keep me awake even though I am tired from working too hard this morning getting the house ready for grand-baby Noah.

I did a search and found a few mentions of two or three people here being placed on this drug, but one of those stopped after the first day due to sensitivity to the drug. I am taking aspirin 30 min before Niaspan to prevent the flushing reaction that often occurs.

Sorry about that! I meant to say that Niaspan is for raising HDL, not lowering it.

Rhoda.

I don't know if I was the one you referred to who stopped Niaspan after one day, but I had to. I had taken niacin for several year way back when, but the Niaspan made me break out in huge welts and hives. It was simply awful! Whatever good might have come from it I'll never know. And I didn't take it long enough to discover how it made my heart feel. I hope things go well with you.

Peace,

Leon

I took it for a short while until i woke feeling my body was on fire and my PCP doc said that i had to go off of it and i even took the asprin before and i was told to take it at night and this happened in the AM so as far as my heart it really didn't bother my until that morning it pounded rather hard

Hi Rhoda:

In your post you mentioned taking asprin to deal with the flushing caused by the medication. Wouldn't the flushing indicate that the niaspan is a vasodilator?

Just a thought.
