Saw the family doctor yesterday. With my HCM he won't prescribe anything, and is going to try to get me into see Dr. Robertson at Mayo. Dr. Lever mentioned him when I was with my daughter at the Cleveland Clinic in May.

The doc said Beta Blockers were contraindicated, but perhaps I should be on an ace inhibitor. Now I read here that that's not wise either. Before I go somewhere and get myself in big trouble, what medicines are ok for HCM patients to take for high blood pressure?

My BP is around 160/80 and I have a dieuretic that will lower it, but it causes more irregular beats. Oddly enough, when my BP is around 160 the irregular beats decrease dramatically and I am pretty asymptomatic. But I know that's not good either. So far I have just lived with HCM on my own, but the BP has me concerned.

Any advice on BP meds?

Calcium channel blockers may work well for you. ACE is not a good idea and I am not sure what your doc is refering to about beta blockers, it is the most common medication taken by those with HCM. If you have true Asthma you may have a problem with BB's, otherwise I can not see what he/she is talking about.

Thank you Lisa. I knew I could count on you to steer me in the right direction. It's amazing the lack of knowledge out there, even by doctors. Now I can do more research before I see someone. Keep up the good work.
