We have been contacted by a researcher who is looking into cases of HCM with sudden death that have survived for at least 8 years post cardiac arrest. It is an interesting point this researcher is looking at and is great news to the HCM community. So far it appears that if someone has a cardiac arrest it may not mean that that person is more likely to have multiple episodes of cardiac arrest - this means IF we can save the person at the time of arrest then the likelihood that person can survive long term is high. Previously some thought that once you had an arrest that you were more likely to have more... this is one myth I would love to bust!
So far the longest survivor in this research has lived 28 years past his first and only cardiac arrest.
If you or a family member has suffered a cardiac arrest 8 or more years ago and survived 8+ years please contact the office and we will make arrangements to have your information shared with the researcher.
Best wishes to all,
Lisa
