Judy O's Story

A story of a patient post myectomy and genetic testing.

I am currently 43 years old and I was diagnosed at age 11. I had a myectomy age 21, too many cardiac caths to count. I am currently in heart failure and take many medications daily. I have had genetic testing done, as well as each immediate family member

Within my family others also have HCM including my sister age 47; son, age 18;  and son, age 15

A complete family history is essential with this disease because of the unknowns, especially with a  50/50 chance of passing the gene onto children. I always wanted to know when my children were smaller, but did not get exact results until a year ago. Both sons were positive, however one showed no clinical signs or symptoms. Since that time the other son has started on medication and has had an ICD placed secondary to a fainting episode. I am grateful for the genetic testing capability.
