Why Butterflies?

Many of us have lost love ones or a part of ourselves to HCM.  The Founder of the HCMA lost her sister to HCM in 1996 and it was the loss of this one person, Lori Flanigan that changed the HCM world by empowering patients.  At the HCMA it is often said that “One butterfly can change the entire world… and she has” - our “butterfly” is Lori.  A Chinese proverb translated means:  A butterfly beating it wings in America can start a hurricane in China.  This is also known as the Chaos Theory’s  “butterfly effect”.

The Chaos Theory says that complex and chaotic systems -- which mean most of the systems we encounter in nature and in society -- cannot accurately be predicted or exclusively controlled.  Neither can rigid systems be easily budged.  However, there's a loophole.  What if we acted through the myriad tiny feedback loops that hold a society together?  Chaos tells us that each one of us has an unrecognized but enormous influence on these loops.  Chaos suggests that although we may not have power of the controller in the traditional sense, we all possess the "butterfly power" of subtle influence.

We are seeking our HCMA membership, family and friends to help bring about change by raising awareness, funding and public awareness about how HCM can impact a life help us really mount a battle to eradicate HCM.

Become a “Butterfly Catcher”!

What is a Butterfly Catcher?

An individual or family can become a Butterfly Catcher by asking friends, family and community members to sponsor an HCMA Butterfly.  Butterfly Catchers gather butterflies” by selling them to “butterfly  sponsors”– when you have collected 20 you have paid for half of the tuition for 2 to the HCMA Annual Meeting June 4-6 in Florham Park NJ.  If you sell 40 you have paid your complete tuition for 2 adults.   You may either collect butterflies as a Butterfly Catcher for your own tuition or you may donate your butterflies to the HCMA so we may offer a scholarship in your name.

Each butterfly can be purchased “in honor” or “in memory” of anyone you wish and a complete list of those honored and memorialized will be posted on the HCMA website with photos of the release.  Sponsors will also receive a special magnet commemorating the release.

Are they REAL Butterflies?

Yes, real butterflies will be released in the courtyard at Hamilton Park Conference Center the weekend of the meeting.  As the weather will play a role in which day we release the butterflies we are not sure what day the release will happen but we are planning on Friday June 4, 2010 during our dinner social.  The butterflies will be “painted ladies” as they are the most common butterfly in NJ and they will be able to live and thrive in the beautiful courtyard.

How do you release a Butterfly?

The butterflies are obtained from a service and come in small pouches.  The participants of the HCMA meeting will each receive a butterfly to release at one time in the court yard.  A few special boxes containing up to 50 butterflies will be the center piece of the release.
